Old Lionel 1122 Switches

I'n in the process of cleaning up my electrical items and have a question about the 1122 and 1122-E differences.  I know the older ones have the segmented rails and do not need the insulated pins on the inner rails.  However my controllers seem to work OK even when I put pins in the early 1122s thus insulating BOTH ground rails.  The E type are no problem and both types are switching OK so far.  But have I eliminated the derailing capability in the early ones by adding the extra insulated pin and should I remove them? I see that I have no ground at all coming into the switch from the EXIT lines.  Does that matter if I have a ground coming in from the ENTER side?  What if I am coming from the other direction?  Any info appreciated.  I also have some questions about repairing some 6109 uncoupler/unloader tracks.  I have one that only unloads and another that only uncouples.  The controller seems to be according to the diagram.  Do I have a short in the track?  Thanks.    Don Newman
