BNSF Diesel Engine Burns Going Up Soldier Summit Utah
Hi Trackers,
Was driving from the Four Corners to Provo Utah today with my ARR railroad scanner on.
Came upon a BNSF freight leaving Helper Utah bound for Provo Utah up Price Canyon and Soldier Summit. This is the former D&RGW mainline between Denver and Salt Lake City now part of the UP with BNSF having trackage rights.
Monitoring the radio channels revealed that a turbocharger had blown on the prime mover of one of four engines and diesel engine lubrication oil was leaking from the turbocharger into the combustion chambers and set off a shower of oil and and fried the prime mover.
The engine could not be automatically shut down so one of the crew members went back to it and tried and got showered with hot black rain. Called the Helper UT fire dept who put out the blaze.
The train then tried to head up to Soldier summitwith the barbequed engine still in the consist but bogged down and requested an aditional engine from the Utah Railroad which shares the double track right of way with the UP.
The fun a person can have travelling the southwest with a railroad scanner!
