I recommend the club purchase a Hawking HA17SIP wireless antenna for the 
legacy base.  It will greatly help the reception.  Here is a URL:

Also, don't use channels 1-4.  The docs say those channels are typically 
used by wireless cameras used by model railroaders (like the one Ira has 
in his container car).
