Re: steam engines and 27" turntables
Hi again Steve,
Here's some more data that I hope will help.
All of the following full scale steam locomotives in my fleet will fit easily on the 27 inch turntable.
Lionel NYC 4-6-4 Hudson
3rd Rail SP 4-8-2 Mountain
3rd Rail GN 4-8-4 S-2 Northern along with all of my UP and SP 4-8-4 Northerns from Lionel, MTH and 3rd Rail
Lionel 2-8-0 Consolidation
3rd Rail UP 4-12-2 9000 Class
3rd Rail Cab Forward SP Am-2 4-6-6-2. This was an early SP articulated and is much shorter than the big AC-12 Cab Forwards
All of my first generation Cab type diesel F3 and E8 A units will fit.
A combined F3 A unit and B unit will fit. But, not an ABA
As previously discussed in my email about what won't fit -- and from my tests at the club layout, all of the above (except the UP 4-12-2) with go through the new club layout curve which I think to be 054 at either end and 072 in the middle. The 4-12-2 bound up on the 054 curves. The rest including Big Boy, Challenger, AC-12 Cab Forward, etc, etc all made it though fine.
The 21 inch passenger cars made it through those curves easily too.
As for how they looked, as I stated previously, I'm a wide curve junky and so think any and all sizes of locomotives and rolling stock look better in wide curves. The wider the better.
And the track centers matter, too.
Rgds, Bill
In general I believe most if not all full scale steam locomotives from 4-8-4 down will fit.

All,
I wonder if folks have any data on what steam engines _will_ fit on an 27" turntable and make O60 curves coming into the turn table.
I know the giants of steam wont make it, but what about other scale engines?
2-10-x?
4-8-4?
4-8-2?
4-8-8-2 cab forwards?
