FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
St. Louis, Missouri – Union Station Book (12/17/03)
St. Louis Union Station is an American treasure. The past and the
present has been captured and published in a new book – St. Louis Union
Station – A City within a City,
Robert C. Holt Jr., a retired 40-year veteran of the St. Louis Post
Dispatch, saw the decline and eventual closing of the station. Through
this book he takes you on a photographic journey through the restored
station, an inside look that will delight those interested in
architecture, photography or St. Louis history.
The book, consisting of color and black/white photographs, tells
the story of the station with an introduction by Holt and then four
separate sections provide details, along with photographs – past and
present.
The first section – “A City within a City,” explains how the
station was built, with stunning architectural photographs from the
present and nostalgic images of the Midway and other areas of the
station.
“Grand Old Station” provides a detailed explanation of how the
station was built, beginning in 1894 and taking the reader through the
many changes, not only in the station, but explains the climate in the
country at the time. Detailed captions for the photographs provide
additional information for the history buffs.
Old postcards and newspaper clippings add an additional historical
touch that appeals to those interested in history. Additional current
images give the reader a sense of what an architectural marvel the
station was when it was built…and now.
Famous people passed through Union Station. People like Harry S.
Truman, whose train pulls up in the wee hours of a November 1948
morning, after the presidential election in which the Chicago Tribune
declares Thomas Dewey the winner, are pictured in this section called
“Famous and not so Famous.”
This section also talks about the many families who watched their
loved ones go off to war at the station. It tells of the good and bad
times for the station and the people who used it.
Throughout the book there are also quotes of people from many
decades who visited the station. They recall their memories of what the
station meant to them. There are also personal stories from different
eras that add a personal touch to the book.
Author Bob McElwee combines “then” and “now” with a mix of current
photographs from Holt to create an exciting snapshot of this great
American treasure. This limited edition soft cover book of 48 pages is a
sampling of what will appear in the hard-cover version later in 2004.
