I think O gauge might be a good choice for you. It's easier to place the
bigger trains on the track and they are very durable. The latest "Classic
Toy Trains" magazine (dec 2003) has an article on building an o-gauge layout
on a 4x8 space. I'm not sure if this sort of layout will complex
enough...you'll have to decide that.
