Re:

You can find some longer straights, 072 length.  Kline made these until last year according to my catalog.  Lionel used to make them too as early as right after the war.  Alternatively, you can buy 36 or 40" straights that can be used to make up different gaps, depending on long the straight away is.  For a few year 36" track was made.  Also you can cut the track to any length you want.  Now for the first alternative I am assuming that you are working with O and not 027 track.  long tracks do come in 027.

Cutting is simple, try to keep at least 2 ties on the piece.   A dremel or hack saw can be used.  Stabilize the rails for cutting.  Cut top down if you can, leaves the burr on the bottom.  File off burrs.

Good Luck

Hey Guys,

Please help a novice at Lionel Trackage. I am working on plans for a layout here in our Computer room, but have a question. I need to use 072 turnouts. I noted they were 14 1/4 inches on the straight side. I also noted the only short section that Lionel lists is 5 1/2. What does one use to put on the other side of the layout to make up either a 4 1/4 or 8 1/2 inch difference. Do what we do in Ho and cut the track to Fit. I really need to know so I Can finish my plans. Also I am looking for at least one pair if not two pairs of 072 turnouts.

Thanks

Dwight
