Re: Trailer Towing

Here is a little information about towing.

Most trucks come with a class IV trailer hitch which has a max tongue weight rating of 500 lbs. This is the main limiting factor here.  A weight distributing hitch can be used to push some of the tongue weight back onto the trailer axles. But the trailer did not always have this much weight on the tongue.

Second is that most 1/2 ton trucks like F150 or Silverado have a payload capacity of 1000 lbs which includes passengers, cargo, and trailer tongue weight. When I get in the truck that uses 200 lbs of the payload. Anything else in the bed or cab counts too.

I have a new truck now and still have the factory P or passenger rated tires.  My old truck had LT rated load range E tires which have stiffer side walls and are better for heavy loads at distance or speed.  I'll get load range E tires to replace the factory ones in the future.

OK did a little checking- tongue weight is 10-15% of trailer weight. So 600-900 pounds. I have watched you guys hook up and it does not look like the trucks settle in the rear as if there was 1500 lbs on the hitch. Scott's truck just levels out with the trailer on.   Unless he has a 3/4 ton.  Mark

If Scott can pull the club trailer with his suburban it and Ed has pulled it with his truck I would think Phil's new truck could pull it as well.

No one else has said they could pull it to San Antonio. At this point we may have to cancel.

Yes, the trailer is in the heavy duty range for tongue weight now. I can tow 9000 lbs but only 500lbs tongue weight.   I could probably go a little heavier with stiffer tires. Scott was looking into a weight distributing hitch to get some of the weight off the hitch but I don't know what he found.

Arghh…

Max tongue weight on mine is 1130 at the receiver, though I can supposedly tow up to 7700 lbs.
That’s the “Max” towing package on ½ ton trucks from them.

Maybe I should have bought a bigger truck? L
With that 1500 lb. tongue weight, that definitely says ¾ ton or better.

Sorry sirs.
Phil

I believe Scott said the tongue weight was 1500 lbs and the total weight was 6000lbs. It is a tandem axle 7x14 and has brakes. Scott and Russell can tell you more as they have pulled it many times.

I may be able to pull the trailer. However, besides needing a 2-5/16 ball, I don’t know the overall trailer tongue weight, weight, length, preferred tongue height, etc.

Just took delivery of a new Ford F150 4x4 truck last Saturday, and I wanted to make sure I wouldn’t overload it before offering.

Let me know,

Ron,

Here’s our registration form. I’m headed to Florida for 2 week family vacation. I’ll have email and my mobile phone available if there are any questions.  Back in Austin by August 9th.

I’ll create our online event coordination document around the end of August.

All the best,
Paul
