Re: FW: Former Zephyr cars on their way to Austin!

I just saw the car. I was wondering what was going to go on the tracks that they had sitting there for months. The Burlington car is in really sad shape. The aluminum is damaged all over the place, and almost all of the windows are broken. I'm glad to hear he's going to restore it. My Texas Zephyr Lionel set from 1980 is one of my favorite passenger sets. I started collecting that set in 1980.

Oops, correcting myself, the Texas Zephyr ran on the Ft Worth and Denver (City) RR while in Texas and then on the C & S in Colorado. Both part of the former CB&Q.

FYI.  Used to see the Texas Zephyr come through Vernon Texas on Colorado and Southern trackage between Dallas and Denver when I was a kid.  It even stopped sometimes.  Big shiny stainless steel E5 diesels pulling her.  Bill

George Z asked me to share this information with the list.  The good news is that they are coming to town, but the bad news is that they will not be used for operation

Here’s some news you may want to share with your e-mail list.  Three streamlined passenger cars from the Burlington’s Texas Zephyr have been purchased by William Osborn of Austin and are being moved from South Dakota.  They will be placed on his property at 9300 US 290 West next to the relocated San Saba depot, where they will be restored and rented for office space.

The observation car was the first to be moved.  One of the aattached pictures shows the 1961 appearance, with a red neon tailsign which will be restoredThe second attachment is how the car looked when new, when it served the Denver Zephyr between Chicago and Denver.  In 1957 it was reassigned to the Texas Zephyr, overnight between Denver and Dallas, which happens to be one of the trains I operate on my layoutOther attachments show the cover of the cocktail menu from 1943 and an interior view.

Here’s a short video of the observation car being trucked down the highway in South Dakota.
