Fw: Class I Railroad Profiles

HI all...the following is from Jim Shutt of the San Antonio Garden RR Society.  He is inviting all Austin folks to a major steam up on May 5 & 6.  See below.  FYI, when I see any of these San Antonio guys at train shows they are always extending an invitation to join them on any of their activities.

Sending these profiles along as interesting reading. With regards to current SAGRS doings , had our first workday with the teenaged community service folks on Tuesday. Only had them for about two hours but got a lot done. Christmas decorations are down, packed and stored away, about 1/3 of the weed eating and blowing is done, and the two tier wall of rail ties along the fence line is about 2/3 done, and they cleaned the beds at the Museum main gate. The real champion of the day was Hunter Scott, our new member from Fredricksburg who did about half of the work himself. Hunter used to be in the landscape business and now he and his wife own and  operate a bed & breakfast just outside Fred called the Cat’s Meow (830-997-0888). Hunter has volunteered to come and do work at the layout when he comes to San Antonio on other errands. Needless to say, we will certainly take him up on his offer. One of the benefits of the community service teens was that we cleaned up a significant portion of the grassy area between the caboose storage and the mainline(ties, switch plates , track levers)making that area easier to mow and consequently easier to maintain in the future. If we do this clean up in the various areas around the museum on a continuing basis, the whole place will look a lot better. They will be back next Tuesday to do more.

For the Model T show/ South Texas steam up on May 5-6, Bill and Connie Foster have volunteered to operate the concessions for SAGRS and we have accepted. Thanks to both of them. My wife and Eric’s wife will be helping out.

Didn’t take time to thank all the folks who made the last train show a success. Obviously, Zip was his always selfless self in organizing, transporting and running the entire event. Eric and Eloy were the guys who got us on the floor and running on Friday and Eric’s family, including the new addition,  made sure everything ran on Saturday and Sunday. Rusty and Lisa and family had time to come by and work on Sunday and all named help us tear down and pack up on Sunday afternoon. Thanks to you all. We literally could not do it with out you. We invite you out to run trains this weekend. With the new labor source, you have a much smaller chance to be tagged for some work effort.

One of the issues we are dealing with is the hours we are available to run trains on weekends when the Museum is open. The more of you who come to run trains on Saturday and Sunday means those of us who seem to always be there can feel to free to maybe have a life aside from the Garden Railroad. Please help. Dottie and Gage came out last weekend and Gage opened up and ran a train for a birthday group when Zip and I couldn’t get there until later in the day. Thank’s Gage.

A couple of personal notes: Bill, we are ready to start installing the landscape timbers to make new beds on the storage tower side of the rail platform. We will need roundup, bed anti-weed lining, topsoil and fertilizer to prepare the beds for more lantana.

Bob, Please make sure all the Austin guys know about the steam up on May 5-6. Even if they do not run live steam we will have track warrants available to run sparkies on our mainlines over the weekend. With the
Model T show and the steam up we are going to have a great time with a good portion of the large scale folks from Texas here. Of course, all of you are welcome anytime you want to make the short 90 minute trip down here. Bring something to run.

Towne and Jon; Since I don’t have a contact for Frolin would you let him know what’s going on, please. He kept asking what we’re doing new and interesting and I think the answer is a lot!
