 Thanks a lot for the explanation of electrical flow on those old 1122s.  I was testing them with a short track on one end just to give the transformer a way to power them.  When I completed the circle they worked fine with and without pins.  I checked out the controllers on those uncouplers and they look OK.  I guess the trouble is in the track itself.  Do you know anyone that would be interested (for a reasonable fee) to check them out and resolder as necessary?  I've seen them at the train shows for 10 or 15 dollars, so maybe no one would even be interested in looking at them as cheap as replacements are.  Anyway, thanks for the "switch" info.  Don

If the ground is brought into the switch through the entering side adequately then the extra pin is not a real problem.  Note that the ground on the out bound tracks after the switch also need ground and it is not coming through the switch so there needs to be a connection somewhere on that side too. 
 
Since ground is coming in from the single track on both outside rails, you should be able to follow those rails tot he other end and if there is no break in the rail, these are the ones that do not need the pin.  If there is a break in the rail as there is on the curve track of an 022 switch, then that is the one that needs the pin. 
 
I probably have the wiring diagrams for the uncouplers.  There could be a broken wire or a bent contact in the controller.  Or the little insulator that makes the contacts behave correctly for the button being pushed could have come out inside the controller.    Take the controller apart and see if there is continuity to the copper contacts.  Be careful to write down how the posts of contacts go together if you take them apart but should not need to for continuity.  check that the connections connect some of the terminals.  if not the problem, then check from the contacts to the rails.
