Plexiglass Project up for grabs...

All,

I did a bit of work a few months ago pricing plexiglass for the layout.  The board has decided to add plexi (in the short run) to the track 1 side of the new yard.  Is anyone interested in taking on the project of getting the best rpice, and getting the product made for us?  I found the best prices at Regal plastics and interstate plastics.  I just let my fingers do the walking.

At this point all we would need is a few detailed options by the March 1st board meeting with the product ready for use by the NB show.

The following is the available information to date:

--------------------------

If we buy a sheet of 4x10 ¼” plexi from regal plastics at $160, we can have 6” sections at approx $8.00 each, 4” at $5.33 and 3” at $4.00.  This doesn’t include loss from cutting.

Or…..  if we buy them from interstate plastics… a 4x8 in 3/16 is $81.60 and $96.32 in ¼”

                                3/16”       1/4”

6” sections          $5.10     $6.02

4” sections          $3.40     $4.01

3” sections          $2.55     $3.01

-----------------------

The new slots hold nominally 1/4 inch wide plexiglass.  Nominally because some sheets come in metric sizes and some american standard sizes. Slighty smaller will work.  Larger won't as it's a tight fit for 1/4 inch material.

The height is 6 inches.  Not sure about the older stuff.

QUANTITIES.  The two Yard Throat (switching) modules each need two pieces.  One 32 1/2 inches long and one 39 1/2 inches long on each module for a total of four pieces.  The three ABCD Yard Modules need one each 48 inches long.  Total of three pieces.

Suggest each piece be cut 1/8 th to 1/4 th of an inch shorter in length to allow some slack for  module dimension inconsistencies.

I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE US TO HAVE THE PLEXIGLASS COMMERCIALLY CUT.  It's free at Lowes and may be with Mike's sources and they do a much better job.  All the sharp edges should be buffed and slightly rounded so people won't cut themselves on it.

We ran out of time to inventory and mark the existing plexiglass at the workday.  But, I hope we will choose to go ahead and get this material.  Will be the final touch for our new switching yard.
