Mike, 18x24.. that's what Z was made for.  I have a few Loco's in 
both Steam & Diesel.  Do you have track?  I think I have enough 
loose track to make an oval.  Z-Gauge runs on DC 8to9 Volt max.  
most will move starting around 2 volts.  

Another thought that should fit (I need to check it for size) and is 
much more rugged, I have 2 Lego trains.  they are 8volt DC 2 rail 
track like "Z" but the gauge is almost "O" and much easier to work.  
You could also use that if it fits.
