Re: Module Information Please

It should have one of the outside rails for each line of track soldered.  It isn't necessary to have a wire on both outside rails for each line of track.

All track grounds should be connected together and then the grounds from the track and both the 6-wire and the 4-wire harness should be connected together.  Last time I believe I daisy-chained a ground wire from track to track and then to the harnesses.  But I also like to use larger wire then called for.

That way there is one big happy ground circuit.  :-)

Also, take care when soldering to the jones plugs.  They like to melt with too much heat and the connectors are so close that with the little amount of 'wiggle' that the pins have it is very easy to get a short at the plug.  I recommend putting a small wrap of electrical tape or a short length of shrink tube over each pin after you solder the wire to it.

When soldering the jones plugs it is really helpful to have one of those jigs to hold everything in place for you.  Of coarse having said that I must admit that I still do it the hard way, holding the wire in one hand, the plug in another hand, the iron in another hand, and the solder in the other hand.  Wait, how did I do that?  Probably with the aid of a few choice words.

Adrian.

Adrian,Thanks.  Thay's news even if not good news.  I will try my torch on a scrap peice of track to see how badly it discolors.  By the way, I noticed that the module had only one of the outside rails soldered.  Is that sufficient?Mike

My 100 watt soldering gun is just barely able to do it, a 150 watt would probably be perfect.  It is that the rail acts like a heat sink pulling all the heat away from where you want to solder.  If you have the blackened center rail the solder will not stick to the blackening so you will need to sand through that stuff where you want to solder too.It usually isn't that bad, you just have to be patient and wait a while until the rail is hot enough.Adrian

Adrian,Thanks.  I knew I had read the spec, but for some reason I couls not locate it.Thanks for the tip about soldering before mounting the track.  I think that's my biggest challenge.  I have two rather low wattage soldering irons.  I suspect I will have some trouble getting enough heat onto the rail.  Does anyone know just how big an iron is needed?  I have a propane torch, but I fear the rail will discolor if I'm not careful with the flame.Mike
