The overhang on the inside corner is a problem that cannot be overcome for the really big engines by putting a straight in between the corners.  They can negotiate the corners better, but they could still hit trains on track 2.
 
It's fine if we want to operate this way we'll just know know not to run any large articulated locomotives.

Id rather have a 5x4 L than a 4x4 square.   Until now, I've never heard of a problem with L layouts, and I told the ASTA folks we could do L layouts.  So I'd rather not change things for Burnet at this point. 
 
What if we put a straight module between the switchback?  Something like this:
