When I was at the Temple Show, I talked to the box man there.  He will be
at the Live Oak show too.  He does a O tray, box which can accommodate
various size units.  Height of box is 3 7/8" tall x 11 5/8" and 27" 
long.  Has dividers that can make spaces 4", 8", 10", 18" and 22"  long. 
Could also get 13 1/4" too.  Sells foam with them.  For your use here are
the sizes of some cars:

The inside Dimensions of the O Scale Tray are 3 7/8 " high X 11 5/8"
Wide by 27" long.
 
Partitions take up 3/8 of an inch.
 
 
There are 4 slots for the Partitions to go into which allow for about
many different configurations.
