Museum Monthly - October

Join us for Archeology Day!

Celebrate Texas Archeology Month with the Temple Railroad and Heritage Museum. The museum is hosting an Archeology Day family program from 11am to 1pm on Saturday, October 5. Visitors can test their skills at creating pottery with ancient pottery techniques, see how arrowheads and spear points are made, piece together an archeology puzzle, and learn about the field of archeology.
Kids will get the opportunity to make a small pot much like the ones found in archeological sites around the world. Kent Hibbitts, a member of the Texas Archeological Society, will also be demonstrating flint knapping techniques used to make arrow heads, spear points, knives, scrapers, and other stone tools.
Everyone is welcome to join in the fun. The Family Day program is offered at the Railroad and Heritage Museum on the first Saturday of each month. Entrance to the program is free and open to the public.

Make a day of it!  Temple Fire & Rescue will be hosting a Fire Safety Day at Whistlestop Park from 8am - 12pm, with a pancake breakfast, vintage firetruck, and family activities. Additionally, the CentraMod model train club will be hosting an open house in the Moody Depot, starting at 1pm.

The Interurban Era
Opens Tues, October 8.

A new exhibit explores the interurban railways and streetcars that shuttled passengers between towns in the first half of the 20th century.  From 1904 to 1925, trolleys carried passengers around Temple and to Belton for a few cents.  These interurban lines offered cheap and convenient alternatives to riding in a carriage or using the railroad to cover a short distance.
The exhibit features photos from the LeRoy O. King, Jr. Collection.  Mr. King, along with his father, photographed and documented electric railways across the country and acquired well over 100,000 images of virtually every interurban that existed in North America.  Mr. King also published and edited numerous books on electric railroads.  His photograph collection is now part of the archives at the Railroad and Heritage Museum.

Reading History Book Club

The Reading History book club will be meeting Tuesday, October 8 at 5:30. The October book is "Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President," by Candice Millard. This best-selling book covers the extraordinary life of President James Garfield and the drama surrounding his assassination. The story has been called "an engaging, elegantly written and insightful look at the political and scientific developments of late-19th century America." (Washington Times Book Review) The Reading History Book Club meets on the second Tuesday of each month from 5:30 - 7 pm for a book discussion. Other book selections can be found on our Book Club page.
