Re: Re: Legacy 1.4 SW upgrade

Thanks for the simple and straight forward explanation on installing the new software. Will be interested to know how it all works wants you get the module.   Joe

Hi,

I just looked at the link which Steve provided. Here is the net result:

1. In order to install any new software update for Legacy (e.g. the version 1.4
which was released recently), you have to purchase a black memory
module from Lionel. This product (6-37125) sells for $19.99. The good
news is that the module is reusable.

2. You have to down load the software and the utility program to install it.

3. You must connect the Lionel Legacy base to your computer via a
serial port. If you don't have a serial port, you can use a serial to USB
adapter.

4. Using the utility (see step 2) you copy the CAB-2 software (on your computer)
to the black memory module (which is inserted into the Legacy Command Base).

5. You can then put the black memory module into the CAB-2 and install the
software.

6. You then have to use the utility to copy the base software (again from your
computer) to the black memory module.

7. You then install the software from the black memory module into the Legacy
Command Base.

Updating the Lionel Legacy software just became as cumbersome as updating
the MTH software. At least with the MTH software updates you don't have to
purchase a special memory device to transfer the files from your computer to
the MTH base and/or handheld.

I downloaded the utility and the Legacy version 1.4 software. I am making
the rash assumption that I can use my laptop to transfer the software to
the Lionel Legacy base. I use it for the MTH updates. However, I know
the first time I tried updating the MTH software the USB to Serial device
I purchased didn't work and I had to get a different type. Hopefully one
of these will work with the Lionel utility.

The club will need to purchase a black memory module for these transfers.

Right now I have the Lionel Legacy Command Base at my house so it will
be easy to test this procedure once I get the module.

It is sad that Lionel made this procedure so complicated. It would have
been a lot simpler if they allowed us to download both the CAB-2 and
the base software onto one module. Then, someone with a Legacy
Command Base at home could have created the module, which we
could have shared. However, in order to share the files, we would
need TWO memory modules (at $19.99 each).
