Make a chalk mark on the out side of the drive wheels- when
you apply power you will be able to see if the wheel is
spinning(otherwise everthing is black-hard to see) If so, look
to see if it has rubber traction tires(like rubber bands) on any
of the drive wheels. If not, look to see if any of the drive
wheels have a groove in them, that would mean there were tires
but they are gone, and you can replace them. If there are no
tires or any grooves to put them in, I have used Bullfrog Snot
(not a joke!) It is an easy to use do-it yourself liquid rubber
that I have used to replace rotted tires or to increase
traction on engines with no tires. Follow the directions (guys
hate that, but do it anyway!) And it will work great. O scale
engines need two coats with 24 hours between and after,(which
is way more drying time than the directions say) as you are
putting on a lot more rubber than on an HO or smaller engine. I
keep really heavy engines on their side for a week as I have had
them "flat spot" during the curing time. Let me know how it
works, or if you need help. Mark Richert

I got a lionel sd40 made in 1987 from ebay, the
unit sounds like it is losing its traction, I
lubricated the gears and oiled the axles like the
directions told me to but still is running the same.
Let me know if there is a way to fix this problem
for I like this engine and want to one of these days
bring to the club. Thx!
