You can definitely come to one of our events, run some trains, meet folks, and hopefully join!  Membership is $50/year.  Here is the application form:

We have a pending event on Nov 5/6 in New Braunfels.   It probably won't be finalized though until much closer to the date though.  Also, in past years, we have been setting up at a downtown Austin location for the year end holiday season.  But at this point we don't know when and if that will happen.
